Yerba Buena Island is a small landmass in the San Francisco Bay, between San Francisco and Oakland. The island holds a tunnel connecting the eastern and western spans of the Bay Bridge, and is connected to Treasure Island by a thin strip of land.
It was named in 1850 by the California Legislature after one of San Francisco's previous names, Yerba Buena, which is Spanish for peppermint.
