San Francisco Public Library Website
The San Francisco Public Library is dispersed throughout the city in 27 branches, with the main branch located in the Civic Center. All branches are easy to get to using only public transportation and most (maybe all?) have bike parking.
During the summer, most branches host summer reading programs for children and teenagers to encourage active literacy outside of school. They have prizes, end-of-program parties, and stickers.
Throughout the year, the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library host used book sales to raise funds for the library. They have a small sale that goes on continuously by the entrance of the main branch. They have larger sales near Fort Mason on special days.
The library's 27 branches have varying hours, services and resources, and some features of particular branches are inaccessible to people who use wheelchairs (until 2010). Some branches may be closed to renovation, and often the surrounding branches offer extended hours to accommodate additional visitors who were diverted from the other branches. A book can be returned to any branch, and it will be returned to the location from where it was checked out.
