The concourse level (May 2008) The BART system's southernmost station serves as a transfer station for Caltrain passengers traveling to and from San Francisco and other areas on the peninsula.
Going north and switching trains is easy. The northbound platforms for both systems are next to each other, at the same level. Northbound passengers must simply pass through a faregate to the area operated by Caltrain, and passengers switching over to BART can do the same. Since BART trains come and go more often, it's pretty convenient to go from Caltrain to BART and then you'll end up in a more central downtown SF location.
Going from one train to the other southbound is slightly more of a pain. Commuters switching from BART to southbound Caltrain must cross to the other side of the platform via an upstairs walkway. There aren't a lot of ticket machines for Caltrain, and for the times of day other than the peak commute hours, Caltrain doesn't run that often. So, going from BART to Caltrain, southbound, means that you might wait for an hour or even two for the next train.
The Millbrae station is 13.7 miles away from the Caltrain terminal in San Francisco and is in Caltrain's fare zone 2. It costs $4 to ride Caltrain between Millbrae and any of the three San Francisco stations, and anywhere from $3.55 to $4 to ride between any of San Francisco's eight BART stations and the Millbrae stop, depending on the distance.
