Alcatraz is an island in the San Francisco Bay. Originally a notorious prison, and home to criminals such as Al Capone, and the Bird Man of Alcatraz. It is now preserved as a state park and a popular tourist destination.
In 1969, Native American/American Indian organizers engaged in a takeover of Alcatraz, fueling a nascent American Indian Movement.
Apparently, night tours of Alcatraz are worthwhile, but you have to book them well in advance.
